And then, five kilometers through the women's 10,000m final, there were three. Hitting the 5,000m mark at 16 minutes, 10 seconds, the lead pack of Shalane Flanagan, Kara Goucher and Amy Yoder Begley had virtually closed the race to the other competitors. Happy to keep with the pack for four kilometers, Flanagan darted to the lead and turned a pedestrian pace into one that, while still off the American record by one minute, was still too fast for everybody else.

Olivia Vivian was stunned.

"I don't know how many eye lashes I have wished upon for this result," Vivian wrote in her blog. "The feeling I have right now is indescribable! The feeling of living your dream, achieving your goal - although it's not complete yet!"

Oregon State gymnastics recruit Vivian is one of six gymnasts nominated to form Australia's women's artistic gymnastics team for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Coming into the 2008 season, Ashton Eaton's best decathlon performance was good for third place at the 2007 USA Junior Championships and a mark of 7,155 points. He now finds himself in fifth place after the first day of the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials, where he was seeded seventh in a field of 20 competitors.

Now Red Sox embattled - and sometimes ridiculous - left fielder Manny Ramirez is in the news for a similar attack, this one taking place in Houston where the Red Sox were playing a three-game interleague series this past weekend.
